Southern Trees

[As Seen from A Plantation Backyard]

How often do you think about the age of trees? I rarely do. I have some vague sense the really big ones are probably pretty old, but the age of a tree rarely feels like it has much to do with things important to people

That changes when you spend time on a plantation in Northern Virginia. The age of trees becomes suddenly salient.

You find yourself photographing trees at 3 am on a beautiful summer night as a distant storm roils and a cicada brood calls and stars swirl against the country-dark sky and you wonder if these trees are where those things happened.
