No one has fond memories of a washing machine. No one gets bleary-eye over a stove. A car, however, is something more that its utility. It is nostalgia for quality time. A circuitous road trip. That summer night at that drive-in that isn't there anymore. It is evidence of hard work and ambition. It is a way to tell the world who you are without saying a word.
In "Garages" we examine the place where we restore, maintain, and keep the machine that drives our fondest memories, passions, and identity. These portraits were created in 2015 over a few summer days in Michigan. The work was commissioned by General Motors for the Employee Garages project.
